Malaysia facing policy 'blowback'

The former head of a Philippine separatist group, the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), has told Al Jazeera that despite support from Malaysia in the 1960s, some of his fighters have now turned against the Malaysian government.

According to Nur Misuari, the MNLF fighters have joined the Royal Army of Sulu, which has been fighting for control of Malaysia's eastern Sabah state.

Al Jazeera's Jamela Alindogan reports from the Philippine capital, Manila, on whether Malaysia's foreign policy in the 1960s has backfired.

Misuari: Kill the Rajah Mudah and it’s war!

MNLF chairman warns Malaysian authorities that if
they killthe leader in Lahad Datu standoff, it would
trigger a war against the Tausugs
MANILA – Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) chairman Nur Misuari on Tuesday warned Malaysia against killing the Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III brother, Rajah Mudah Agbimuddin Kiram, and his men in Sabah as doing so would be tantamount to a declaration of war against the Tausugs and the former separatist group.
Speaking to reporters, Misuari advised Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak: “Once you do that, that will be tantamount to declaration of war against our people and the Moro National Liberation Front. It is our sacred duty to protect our people.
“Every drop of their blood is sacred to us,” Misuari added.
The MNLF founding leader, who signed a peace agreement with the Ramos government in 1997, also rejected as “wild speculation” any insinuation that he was behind the moves taken by the followers of Sulu Sultan Jamalul Kiram III in Sabah, www.abs-cbnnews.com reported.

By Edd K. Usman

MANILA, Philippines — Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founding Chairman Nur Misuari yesterday appealed to Malaysia to settle the Sabah standoff peacefully and warned that his group will come to the aid of Sultan Jamalul Kiram III’s followers if blood spills.

“I hope they will not harm them. They (Kiram’s followers) are our brothers. If one drop of their blood is spilled, we might be forced to come to their aid,” Misuari said.

“Please don’t touch them, give them a friendly and brotherly treatment,” Misuari appealed.
