Brunei bans public Christmas celebrations to ‘protect’ Islamic faith

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 8 — Oil-rich Brunei has banned public celebrations of Christmas for fear of Muslims being led astray, its religious affairs ministry said today, in a country that last year controversially instituted tough Islamic sharia penalties.

The ban, instituted after Christmas last month when local children and adults were seen wearing clothes “that resemble Santa Claus”, raises fresh concerns of religious restrictions after last April’s announcement of the introduction of a penal code that will eventually include penalties such as the severing of limbs and death by stoning.

Islam not a religion but way of life, says Kuwaiti writer

GEORGE TOWN, Feb 25 — Islam has been misunderstood to be a “religion” when it is really a way of life that preaches freedom for all, including non-Muslims, Kuwaiti author and Islamic motivational speaker Dr Tareq Al-Suwaidan said last night.

The self-described “moderate Islamist”, whose television shows draw millions of viewers on satellite networks in the Middle East, also said Islam’s goal is to create a civil state that administers justice that does not discriminate against a person’s skin colour, gender, or creed.

The Dangers of Legitimizing Muslim Grievances

"...To a Muslim, "injustice" means a lack of Islamic jurisprudence.
" A non-Muslim state is always unjust simply because it is not ruled by Islamic law.

My Bible, My faith, My church

Perkasa has lighted a fire of religious
intolerance which is burning slowly but
will grow bigger if not doused.
Perkasa chief Ibrahim Ali wants to make a bonfire of the Malay version of the Bible that uses the word “Allah” and is written in Jawi. But a Bible is a Bible, whether it is in English or Malay or Jawi. It is still a sacred book and to throw it into the fire is an act of sacrilege. He is encouraging a course of action which is likely to lead to dire consequences. He has forgotten that Malaysia is a land shared by many races and faiths.
Ibrahim has triggered widespread resentment in the Christian community for making such a provocative statement. Most of the worshippers using the Malay-language Bible are native Christians in Sarawak and Sabah. They also work and live in the Peninsula and continue to practise their faith. They have been using this Bible for ages without anyone trampling on their rights to religious freedom. The Bible is their faith and their church. But now come Ibrahim and his Bible-burning threat.

God and religion, two separate matters

The raging ‘Allah” issue has left this writer
wondering if Jakim and National Fatwah Council
clerics who can both “see and read” are “blind”.
When I was young, my teacher  told me that if I want to study facts I should take up archaeology, but if I want to find out what truth is all about I should choose philosophy.
I ended up somewhere in the middle and discovered that between scientific evidence and logic, there are matters that require a 3rd element called faith -  to believe and accept in the absence of  facts and figures. And religion is one such matter.
Let me give an example: Many people will ref use to switch-off  the life supporting machine attached to a loved one who is in a comatose even though their religion tells them that there is a better place on the other side.

Interesting Facts About Religions

The facts about religions, whether you are a believer or not that is a secondary matter, the following facts have some sensible things, which all literate persons must admit. Please read with an open mind.  I mean no disrespect to any particular religion.

Christians not wrong if Perkasa's allegations true

By Joe Fernandez
Perkasa's latest allegations on the Christians, given undeserved space by malaysiakini, are going viral on the net.

This is the first time that a Muslim, Ibrahim Ali, has threatened to launch a Crusade -- Perang Salib or War of the Cross -- against Christians. So far, all Crusades in world history have been launched by Christians against Muslim occupation of the Holy Land.

If Perkasa wants to fight for the Cross, Christians would no doubt welcome it.

Islam, the Quran and Mohamad

By Joe Darlington
The singular contribution of Islam to the concept of religion or theology is that it killed the idea of God, if he did exist, continuing to send down prophets to Earth to guide mankind.

Islam, in its first recitation in the Quran, clearly states (like Buddhism) that there is no God but the religion holds that if a God did exist, then he would have certain attributes. The religion refers to the 1001 known attributes of God and this figure is sometimes mistakenly referred to as the various names by which God is called.

A Letter from Prof Dr Mohamad Tajuddin Mohamad Rasdi

By Prof Dr Mohamad Tajuddin Mohamad Rasdi

I wish to comment on the latest ‘incident’ of certain Malay group’s criticism of the MP Teo Nie Ching’s presence in a surau in Kajang. There are certain Malays who are bent on ‘racialising’ Islam and making what is usually a Malay custom or belief be part of theIslamic tradition. In this case, many Malays believe that non-Muslims should not step foot in the mosque especially in the so called ‘sacred’ area of the prayer space.

If the non-Muslims were to do so, they must wear elaborate robes and step on carpets over the carpets used for prayers by Muslims. As a scholar in mosque architecture, I have completed a doctoral thesis on this subject matter and have published two books thus far; The Mosque as A Community Development Center by Penerbit UTM and the book Peranan, Kurikulum dan Rekabentuk Masjid Sebagai Pusat Pembangunan Masyarakat also by Penerbit UTM.
