Australia, under new PM, in cahoot with KL on human right issues?

Australia's Sept. 20 refusal to grant the Malaysian political activist and lawyer Haris Ibrahim a temporary visa may indicate a new attitude on the part of the Abbott government to go out of its way to placate Southeast Asian governments on human rights and civil liberties in the interests of government-to-government relationships.

Haris was turned down for a visa by the Australian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur although he was

When your sins can be cleansed

On 24th June 2006, Malaysia Today organised a dialogue session with Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the Kelab Century Paradise. Many of the PAS and DAP leaders attended this dialogue, which was the platform that Dr Mahathir used to launch his attack on Umno and Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. Basically, it was Dr Mahathir’s version of the ABU or ‘anything but Umno’ campaign.
Only a few of the PKR leaders attended, though, and later that year, during the PKR convention in Penang, Azmin Ali attacked me while Anwar Ibrahim looked on with a smirk on his face. Azmin called me a collaborator and in not so many words told me to go to hell. They were pissed big-time because I was now ‘working’ for Dr Mahathir. Well, I continued to ‘work’ for Dr Mahathir right up to November 2007 when we launched the now historical Bersih rally, which, incidentally, was also supported by Umno people, in particular those aligned to Dr Mahathir. They donated loads of T-shirts and caps as well.

Inaugural HINDRAF ABU Forum at Dewan MBSA, Seksyen 30 Shah Alam violently disrupted by Samseng Jalanan

Today is the first time the regime has chosen to use youths, some of whom look like they are in their teens, to threaten and harm their fellow citizens who are engaged in a legitimate expression of their right to free speech and assembly.

The inaugural HINDRAF and ABU forum planned at Dewan Orang Ramai MBSA, titled "Tamatkan Rejim UMNO/BN" was violently disrupted by a gang of youths on motorcycles.

The event started at 9.20 pm, and within minutes of the speakers taking their seats on stage, a group of Samseng Jalanan rode their motorcycles into the venue, with horns blaring in an attempt to disrupt the proceedings.

UBF: Political Ploy By Sabah BN On RCI To Garner Votes Only

By Edward Linggu

“Sabahans and patriotic Sabahan leaders need to understand the ploy of Sabah BN led by UMNO, PBS and UPKO on the recent announcement by UMNO Sabah that UMNO Sabah has no objections to the setting up of the RCI on illegal immigrants issue. The play-acting continued with UPKO and PBS rushing to “angkat” their political bosses by heaping praise on UMNO’s statement of no objections” said Edward Linggu, Campaign Director of UBF.

While it is to be complimented the statement that UMNO Sabah has no objections to the RCI, it has to seen in the light of growing ground-swell amongst the people in Sabah in support of the RCI including many Muslim NGOs in recent times as well as the backlash against UMNO and Sabah BN in the forthcoming general elections due anytime soon.

Principles beat personalities

I don’t really blame all those people who feel enraged by the apparent defection of erstwhile pro-democracy blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin to the Umno/BN or at least anti-PKR ranks.

raja petra Live telecast of the MCLM Forum in LondonBut I feel that RPK’s rank betrayal of his former followers and fans is a blessing in disguise: a timely lesson in the fact that we can count on nobody to save us but ourselves.

UBF ‘agrees’ to back ABU

By Luke Rintod of FMT
LABUAN: The organisors and sponsors of peninsular-based the ‘Anything But Umno’ (ABU) movement, which is calling for the removal of Umno in the next election, are seeking partners in East Malaysia.

Leading civil advocate, Haris Ibrahim (photo), yesterday flew to the Federal Territory of Labuan, defying the Sabah government’s “persona non grata” order slapped on him recently, to hold talks with Sabah political activists led by Daniel John Jambun.
